Family of man killed by shock at air pump sues manufacturer, 7-Eleven

VERO BEACH — The family of the man killed from an electrical shock at an air pump machine will bury him Saturday and is suing the manufacturer and the store that had the machine.

The son and daughter of Joseph Lochetto Sr. filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Minnesota-based Air-Serv Group LLC and 7-Eleven, said the family’s attorney, Charles Sullivan Jr. The wrongful death complaint said faulty equipment in the machine caused an electrical shock that injured and killed Lochetto.

Vero Beach police said Lochetto, who was 53, was pumping air into a tire on his Chevrolet van at the 7-Eleven in the 2200 block of U.S. 1 on the morning of Aug. 16. A witness told police Lochetto was filling the tire when he cried out and collapsed. Lochetto was hospitalized and died Sept. 15 from his injuries, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit alleges Air-Serv, the manufacturer of the machine, and 7-Eleven were negligent in its maintenance of the equipment. The family is demanding medical expenses, funeral expenses and Lochetto’s lost income be paid by the companies, according to the lawsuit.

Neither officials for the convenience store chain nor Air-Serv could be reached for comment Thursday.

Family and friends will gather for Lochetto’s memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home Chapel in Vero Beach.
