A Florida man Dies from Air Machine
VERO BEACH — Employees at a 7-Eleven told police that Joseph M. Lochetto was a daily customer at the store.
But after a reported mechanical malfunction at the air pump machine Sunday, the 53-year-old Vero Beach man spent the week in critical condition at Indian River Medical Center after suffering from an electrical shock, a hospital spokesman said Friday.
The incident will not be investigated as a criminal matter, police said. Vero Beach attorney Charles Sullivan Jr. said he is representing the family for potential civil action.
“We’re investigating the accident to see if there was any negligence on the part of 7-Eleven or Air Serv Group,” Sullivan said Friday. Air Serv, which is based in St. Paul, Minn., owns and operates the air machine, according to the police report.
Lochetto, of the 900 block of 19th Street, was pumping air into a tire on his Chevrolet van at the 7-Eleven in the 2200 block of U.S. 1 about 9:50 a.m. Sunday. Employees told police Lochetto frequently uses the air machine on the property. A witness told police Lochetto was filling the tire when he cried out and collapsed, still clutching the pump nozzle.
Paramedics from Indian River County Fire Rescue arrived and were able to revive Lochetto before taking him to the hospital, the police report said. Police said Lochetto had burn marks on his left arm and chest.
After the incident, an electrician who inspected the machine told police he found a faulty ground wire. Other customers had used the machine, which is powered by a 120-volt connection, earlier that day and reported no problems, the police report stated.
